  • Bruno Sued By (Former) Terrorist

BrunoJust because Bruno is out in the theaters now doesn't mean that the controversy surrounding it is going to end any time soon. The latest: a "terrorist" who was interviewed by Bruno is looking for damages. Legal damages, that is.

It's a scenario that Sacha Baron Cohen had anticipated with some trepidation on his rare out-of-character appearance with David Letterman last week. After describing all the hoops he had to jump through to set up the first ever real interview between a comedian and a terrorist, he commented that this was one victim he really didn't want to see his movie.

Whether Ayman Abu Aita, labeled as a terrorist from the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade in Bruno, has actually seen the movie is still unclear. But he has definitely heard about it now, and he's furious at the way he was depicted. Apparently part of his complaint is that he is not, as Bruno implies, a terrorist. At least, not anymore. He says he quit that group a couple of years ago.

To be fair, if he really were the terrorist he's made out to be, would Bruno have survived suggesting that "... your King Osama looks like a kind of dirty wizard or a homeless Santa"?

  • Was Bruno's Cage Match Audience Just Liquored Up?

BrunoEven before the movie opens, it's clear that the penultimate scene in Brüno will continue to be one of its most controversial. Designed to very graphically bring out the homophobia in a small southern town, the cage-match-turned-same-sex-make-out scene ended in violence and a narrow escape for Sacha Baron Cohen and his crew.

Some people from the town of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, where the filming took place, are calling foul though, claiming that the the whole thing was just a set up. The crowd, they say, was plied with cheap beer and cheap tickets, frustrated by long delays, and provoked in other ways to elicit an exaggerated reaction. Filmmakers allegedly even threw T-shirts with homophobic phrases and profane images out into the crowd to get things going.

Others in the town are not so sure how unrepresentative the scene is, though. Newsweek recounts the tale of a young gay couple in that town hounded out of a bar for the far less provocative act of slow dancing. Although they weren't physically assaulted themselves, they later found their car's fender all smashed up. For that couple at least, Brüno's depiction of Ft. Smith doesn't seem all that far from reality. They say they are planning to get out of town just as soon as they finish college.

  • Bruno Out of Character During Letterman Interview

BrunoThe publicity tour for Bruno has been quite a carnival ride, and will no doubt help load up the eventual DVD with tons of extras. But with the movie opening this Friday, Sacha Baron Cohen has finally done something really unexpected: he appeared, not as Bruno, but as himself on Late Show with David Letterman

All of Cohen's previous interviews had been done strictly in character, recycling an entertaining but limited repertoire of one-liners designed to shock, outrage, and confuse. But for David Letterman, the comedian took off his metaphorical mask and was — or at least appeared to be — the real Sacha Baron Cohen. He was still funny though, recounting his difficulties setting up the first-ever interview between a comedian and an actual terrorist. As you might expect, Cohen says he isn't exactly looking forward to screening his finished product for this particular audience.

  • Bruno Takes on America and Arnold Schwarzenegger

BrunoSay what you will about Sacha Baron Cohen, aka Bruno, it's clear that he'd never stoop to flattering his audience into seeing his upcoming movie. Asked his opinion of Americans in an interview with Empire, he had this to say:

The Amerikanischers come in all shapes and sizes, but mainly extra large. When I first arrived, I thought Ich was in a special airport for fatties. Also America is supposed to be ze land of freedom and opportunity, but they will close a place pretty quick if you start schtupping a guy in a public fountain.

He appears to have absolutely no fear of lawsuits – or Terminators – either. Things go really over the top, even by Bruno's standards, when talk turns to "fellow Austrian" and current governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger:

Not many people know this but me and Arnold actually were together from 1983 for almost 7 minutes. It was one of the heats for the Mr. Universe contest. And Arnold needed to lose 14 grams really quickly...

You can let your imagination take it from there, or check out the full interview over at Empire.

  • Ending of Bruno Altered Due to Extreme Content
    Bruno

Bruno has already gotten a lot of attention for its controversial depictions of homosexuality, and according to Movieline the movie's original ending would have made things much worse for Sacha Baron Cohen and director Larry Charles. The pair has already suffered the ire of the gay community, even though their proclaimed intention is to mock homophobia.

SPOILER ALERT!!! If you wish to see the movie without any prior knowledge, do not read on!

The movie concludes with Bruno making out with his male assistant in an Arkansas cage match, much do the dismay of the onlooking crowd (surprise, surprise). The spectators turn violent and attack the couple, resulting in serious injury. In the upcoming theatrical release, the audience is then shown Bruno and his partner, who happily reunite and decide to adopt a baby. The whole thing ends on an up note with a song supporting gay rights.

This is only part of what was seen, though, when Cohen and Charles screened the movie this past February for industry professionals. Writer-director Richard Day (Arrested Development, Ellen) – one of only two gay men at the screening, along with actor Jack Plotnick (Reno 911!, Drawn Together) – had this to say about the original ending and his subsequent comments to other viewers:

The cage-match kiss resulted in a violent attack on the couple. They then cut to a press event where they are announcing their marriage or plans to, I forget which. But the boyfriend is now drooling, seemingly brain-damaged, and in a wheelchair, played for laughs ... I started in and Jack joined with his thoughts. By the time I got to the bashing, the audience started defending the movie. They were annoyed with us for ruining the party ... I don’t know if we’re why they changed it, but if we are, I regret saying anything. It would have been better to let them expose their true point of view; thanks to us, they had a road map of the most egregious offenses and can also claim to have been responsive to our concerns.

Day also had a chance to read the script when he consulted with Cohen and Charles earlier. His response was that it read as if the authors "didn’t know much about actual gay life."

Next Showing: Bruno opens nationwide on July 10, 2009.

  • Details About the Making of Bruno Revealed

BrunoWant the inside scoop on what went down with Sacha Baron Cohen and his crew during the making of Brüno? Well, Cinema Blend has posted some very detailed accounts from the production notes of the movie, which opens July 10.

Among the movie moments discussed is Cohen's crashing of a European fashion show, a stunt already well-publicized in the trailer.

The producers were euphoric when Baron Cohen (as Brüno in a Velcro suit covered with clothing) fell onto the runway. The crowd went wild in outrage while the cameras rolled. Just as the team caught the footage they needed, security shut the lights off and dragged Baron Cohen off the stage. Police cuffed the actor and hauled him to jail while his fellow crewmembers chased him down.

Another scene previewed in the trailer is Cohen's standoff with four Alabama hunters.

Once the hunters realized Brüno was gay and believed he was hitting on one of them, they readied their rifles. The production found itself in a standoff in the dark with armed men who were growing increasingly agitated by Baron Cohen’s pranks. The hunters were stewing by the time the team pulled up stakes, and their reactions were soon reaching a boiling point. During one discussion, one of the men actually pulled a weapon on a crewmember and pointed it at him.

  • Bruno Impostor Tries to Steal the Show in Sydney

BrunoWho else could it be? He arrived at the Sydney premiere of Brüno in a pink stretch Hummer, attended by a scantily-clad troupe of male and female dancers. And then he began pouring tomato sauce all over himself.

But this was no Sacha Baron Cohen. It was just a promoter for a fast food chain, who was summarily evicted once security realized what was up. Then the real Brüno showed up in his typical fashion, leading a white horse and decked out as a knight in shining, but unusually revealing, armor.

It was the final stop on his world premiere tour for Brüno and Cohen left those in attendance with the hope that his movie, like herpes, would "continue to infect audiences for the next 1,000 years."

  • Early Bruno Reviews

BrunoSome early reviews of Bruno, starring Sacha Baron Cohen, are in. Unfortunately, the response seems a little more muted than we were hoping for.

Jimmy O of JoBlo.com, who gave the movie an 8 out of 10, says:

So yeah, Brüno is outrageous, sick and offensive but pretty damn hilarious.... Bruno may not have the freshness that Borat had, but it will please Cohen's fans nonetheless.

Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter says:

The calculations behind Baron Cohen's ambushes too often are mean-spirited. We sense, as we never did with Borat, the comic behind the character. Especially when his accent keeps changing — from an unconvincing Austrian to his own British and even to a whisper of Borat himself.

Consequently, the character's gayness reads false. Baron Cohen needs to spend more time in certain gay bars if he wants to learn how to do "flamboyant" and "fabulous." It's a ghost of the real thing.

    Todd McCarthy of Variety concurs:

[The movie's jokes] should be enough to make any movie fly. But there is also a pronounced nasty streak to the innumerable provocations staged by the title character.

We're curious as to what could possibly seem more "mean-spirited" and "nasty" than Borat's hilarious antics at the Alabama dining club, his candid-camera takedown of drunken frat boys, or his point-blank insults of New York feminists. But if Cohen can pull those off, we suppose we shouldn't put anything past him. We'll keep you posted as more reviews continue to trickle in.

  • Bruno Skewers Bullfighting in Spain

BrunoPerhaps just to prove — to homophobes, to gays, to Austrians, to nationalists of all stripes — that he is an equal opportunity offender, Brüno took on Spanish cultural stereotypes in a bullfighting ring in Madrid. He strode around the arena dressed as a bull sporting hooves and a typically inappropriate attempt at anatomical correctness.

As for political correctness, he proved he could do that pose too, proclaiming to the audience:

Ich have come to redress the wrong done to the gay community by that Hollywood movie on Harvey Milk which was acted by Sean Penn, who's not even gay.

Oh, the irony. Statements like this make the rumors that he re-shot parts of Brüno at the behest of an outraged gay community seem rather less likely. For Brüno, clearly, any sort of outrage is a feature, not a bug.

Interested in seeing Brüno and his "marching band" parade the streets of London while donning the bearskins of Her Majesty's guards? We thought so.

In yet another promtional stunt for the Brüno movie, Sacha Baron Cohen arrived in Leicester Square with a cadre of scantily clad marchers. They proceeded to strut their stuff while a marching-band version of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" played in the background.

  • Has Bruce Willis Topped Bruno?

Bruce WillisSacha Baron Cohen has already played cover girl for Marie Clarie, so his latest cover stunt (striking a Jennifer Aniston pose for the cover of GQ) is perhaps not so surprising — although his homoerotic take on the football field is admittedly a head-turner.

But what's up with Bruce Willis, who seems to have been channeling his inner Brüno in a bizarre S&M/sci-fi photo spread with his wife for W Magazine? Perhaps he's getting the mood for his role in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Surrogates. In the trailer for the movie, he can be seen intermittently trying out a whole different kind of new look — hair of all things — with somewhat problematic results.

  • Bruno Does Paris

BrunoIn Paris on the French leg of a promotional tour for Brüno, Sacha Baron Cohen was, as usual, never out of character. Driving down the Champs-Élysées in a car decorated with feathers and the head of a swan, and attended by an entourage of models decked out in his own peculiar brand of Austrian fetish-wear, Brüno was, fashion watchers concluded, "très Village People."

He was clearly out to see if he could shock even the jaded Parisian audience into seeing his movie. Appearing on a popular French talk show, he reprised some of his more outrageous promotional tweets:

The film I have just made is the most important documentary about a gay white guy since The Passion of The Christ ... I thought of calling it the fashion of the Christ.

And then he really got down, stripping off his hot pants to reveal a thong with French President Sarkozy's face on it. The audience was reportedly quite amused.

  • How Gay-Friendly Is Bruno?

BrunoAlthough Sacha Baron Cohen is (relatively) straight, the character he has created for Brüno draws on and pumps up nearly every stereotype of a gay man one can imagine. Not too surprisingly, this has stirred up a certain amount of controversy in the gay community, typically over-hyped in the Drudge Report headline: "Gay Groups Growing Concern Over Bruno."

Truth is, reactions are mixed. No one is accusing Cohen/Brüno of homophobia, but he sure does provoke it. And that's the point. Early on the movie was given the mock title "Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt." Plausible enough that several media outlets mistook it for the real thing.

In one particularly provocative scene shot in a southern honky-tonk, Brüno gets into some homoerotic cage-fighting, with a predictably ferocious audience response. A piece in the New York Times notes that filmmakers had contacted Elton John to see if they could use his hit from The Lion King, "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," as an ironic counterpoint for the scene. Apparently, that was a little much for Sir Elton, who said no. But then he said yes to contributing to the movie's closing song.

The response of gay rights groups is similarly ambiguous. While some have expressed concerns, others find worrying about the educational value of Brüno a bit straight-laced.

  • Austria Prepares to Combat Bruno

BrunoThe Austrian press has begun to batten down the hatches in preparation for the arrival of Brüno, pondering the extent of possible damage to its national brand -- and dignity.

In Brüno, Sacha Baron Cohen plays a flamboyant gay Austrian fashionista possibly modeled on a real Austrian television presenter, Alfons Haider. Haider, who is known for his own diva-like style on screen, has no problems with the comparison -- for the most part. He is a little worried, though, about some of the right-wing stuff that Bruno comes out with.

That's a worry underlined by Brüno's recent statements off-screen elevating a notorious Austrian sex criminal to the status of national icon and flippantly bringing up a Hitler connection that the country would rather forget. "Will Nazi replace our Dirndl image?" reads one recent headline on the controversy. In light of what happened to Kazakhstan's reputation after Brüno's predecessor Borat had his way with it, perhaps not an entirely misplaced concern. Still, you'd think they might be a bit more concerned about the impact of his yellow lederhosen hot pants.

  • What Happened to Sherlock Holmes with Will Ferrell and Sasha Baron Cohen?

Will FerrellAround the same time that Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes was being prepped for production, another Sherlock Holmes was announced. Instead of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law playing Holmes and Watson, it would feature Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen as the famous duo in the first comedic version of Holmes since Michael Caine in 1988's Without a Clue.

Ritchie's Sherlock is opening December 25. However, the Ferrell-Cohen version seems to have disappeared. Ferrell explained the situation to HollywoodOutbreak:

We're trying to develop [Sherlock Holmes]. We've got a script written by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder). I just met with Sacha three weeks ago, we're kinda talking about it some more. It's just a question of the Robert Downey Jr. one that they just shot, which I think comes out during Christmas. I think everyone just wants to see ... well, that one's probably going to be, you know, a hit kind of franchise, and whether that is something you want to go up against or would it inform the audience to allow for us to do a comedy version or would it just feel like, "Oh we're just trying to copy them." Even though, I think, we wrote our script before they did. But yeah, we're thinking about it.

This follows a string of bad luck for Ferrell, whose Land of the Lost bombed at the box office while the possibility of an Anchorman sequel recently became doubtful at best.

  • Playing Cover Girl, Brüno Dishes Some Mean Gossip

BrunoSacha Baron Cohen has scored an unusual coup ... for a man. In full-on Brüno mode, he's this month's cover girl for the fashion mag Marie Claire. Striking some unconventional poses with and on fashion models, he muses "Vy do zey give out Nobel prizes for physics, medicine und svimming, but not for fashion?" It may not be Nobel prize material, but his skin-tight leopard print leotard with matching hat and boots is definitely an original look.

Cohen is also fully prepared to share his own fashion perspective in the accompanying interview. He goes through the alphabet, finding provocative material in each letter. In this fashion litany, L is for "Little black child... thanks to Madonna und Brüno, it’s zis season’s vardrobe essential." Definitely meow, but that's just the tip of the outrage.

Since he's playing a gay Austrian fashionista, he takes time out to dish out some choice letters for his adoptive homeland as well, reinterpreting Hitler's Mein Kampf as a fashion bible and refashioning notorious sex criminal Josef Fritzl into a model Austrian. Thus A is for Austria, where they "try und achieve ze Austrian dream – find a job, get a dungeon und raise a family in it."

Yikes. Makes you wonder how well this whole Brüno phenomenon is going to go over in Vienna.

  • Sacha Baron Cohen Sued by Brüno Victim

BrunoThe first lawsuit is in.Variety reports that on May 22 a woman from Palmdale, CA, sued Sacha Baron Cohen and NBC Universal over a stint at a bingo game two years ago.

Cohen was filming a segment for his upcoming Brüno, due in theaters July 10, when Richelle Olson "struggled" with the film crew. She claims Cohen used obscenities in front of an elderly audience, at which point she tried to take a microphone away from him. She says that Cohen's crew then attacked her, resulting in Olson leaving the event in tears. The lawsuit says she subsequently fell to the floor hitting a concrete slab and is now "seriously injured" and in need of a wheelchair or cane.

We expected something like this sooner or later, after what happened three years ago. As a result of his antics in Borat, Cohen received lawsuits from several of the movie's victims, including a driving instructor, two etiquette teachers, and perhaps most famously, a group of frat boys who made racist and sexist comments on camera in a drunken stupor.

Courts dismissed several of the suits, claiming that contracts were signed relieving the filmmakers from liability. Although Olson signed a similar agreement, her lawsuit claims that the contract contained misrepresentations and that she signed under "duress."

It's unclear whether the episode made it into the movie, but we wouldn't be surprised if we suddenly hear about other lawsuits in the weeks and months following Brüno's release.

  • Studio Goes Under the Radar with In-Your-Face Marketing of Brüno

BrunoClosing the book on all sorts of speculation, MTV has finally fessed up that the notrorious Brüno-Eminem incident the other night was staged. In the bigger picture though, it's all part of the innovative under-the-radar marketing campaign that Universal has cooked up for its most outrageous product, according to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal.

The studio has, the Journal reports, skipped most of the trappings -- and expense -- of a normal marketing campaign for Brüno. It's all about putting into practice what it learned from Sasha Baron Cohen's previous project, explains industry analyst Robert Marich:

One of the things about Borat was that it surprised everyone.... It had a much bigger opening than tracking surveys indicated because it had such a viral buzz. The challenge here for Universal is to sustain that with Brüno, which isn't always easy with high-concept movies because they're not so fresh the second time around.

Given the huge amount of gossip swirling around Brüno's latest antics, it seems that the studio may well be on its way to overcoming that hurdle.

  • New Bruno Trailer Arrives, Cleaned Up but Not Toned Down

BrunoA new trailer for Bruno has finally arrived, and it's much like the old trailer -- up to a point. The first trailer was age-restricted, presumably for some very brief nudity, a bit of sex-toy jousting, and a sprinkling of S&M. The new cleaned-up version isn't really any less outrageous, though.

Most of the new footage comes towards the end. We get a glimpse of his encounter with former presidential candidate Ron Paul, cut off abruptly when Bruno drops his pants. He explains to a largely African-American talk show audience how he managed to adopt his African baby "O.J." -- by swapping him for an i-Pod. And while we don't actually see him playing musketeer with the sex toys this time, we do get a better idea of who he went to for this eccentric self-defense lesson. Bruno asks the man, "How do you protect yourself from being attacked by homosexuals?" In all seriousness, he replies, "They probably would tackle from behind."

  • Did Brüno Have an Embarrassing Accident?

BrunoFinally, after all of the pranks, humiliation, and embarrassment he has visited upon others, Sacha Baron Cohen might just have finally gotten his ass handed to him -- so to speak.

The British tabloid The Sun is reporting that in an ill-fated attempt to push the fashion envelope in a publicity shoot for his new movie, Cohen injured himself so badly "around a certain part of his anatomy" that he couldn't sit down for three days. Supposedly, in an attempt to simulate hairlessness, which he had heard was fashionable in the gay community, he had a body bleach done and certain bits proved much more sensitive than expected.

Hmm. It could be true. But it sounds an awful lot like some of the prurient observations about his nether regions that he is so fond of dropping into his Brüno Twitter feed. Just the other day, for example, he saw fit to inform the world that "Brüno tried to self-wax his arschenhaller and ist now stuck to ze bed."

So, fact or fiction? Perhaps only his hairdresser knows for sure.

  • Paula Abdul Dishes on How She Got Punked by Brüno

BrunoAmerican Idol judge Paula Abdul called in to a radio station yesterday to explain how she ended up doing a cameo for Sacha Baron Cohen's Brüno. The confession didn't come easily. Even though it all occurred over a year ago, she had no idea until just recently exactly what had happened to her.

She had gotten this call telling her that she had been voted Artist of the Year in Germany, and that they wanted to film an interview. When she showed up, things started to get a bit weird. She's greeted by "this Captain Nemo-looking dude with a mohawk," but she just figures that it's going to be like some sort of weird Japanese game show. But there's no furniture and Brüno comes in and offers her a couple of Mexican gardeners to sit on. She refuses but he won't take no for an answer, and pushes her down. And then he kicks one of them and they all fall down.

At this point, Abdul finally decides things have gone too far, and heads out, with Brüno and the camera crew hot on her heels. And she never even did get her award.

Rumor has it that there may be more such celebrity confessions to come, with Ben Affleck and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger among Brüno's possible victims.

Always on the cutting edge of fashion, Brüno gives us a come-hither look and shows us his backside, decked out in some very bright yellow lederhosen hot pants riding up a bit too far, with echoes of the infamous Borat bathing suit. Not to mention the sleeveless red checked top. Like the movie's red-band trailer, this Brüno poster is keen for a match-up with its only real competition -- Borat -- which it dismisses as "so 2006."

He has also positioned himself in the twitterverse, posting tweets under the name brunovassup. Only one post so far, though, informing fans that his new movie is "basically ze most important documentary made about a hot vhite guy since Passion of Ze Christ."

And just when you think his ego couldn't get any bigger, he picks up another couple of rave reviews over at AICN.

  • April Fools Movie Rumors and a Bruno Band Aid Parody

BrunoIt's just not true. William Shatner is not slated to appear in the sequel to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. Guillermo del Toro is not in negotiations to expand his adaptation of The Hobbit into a trilogy. And, however cool it might seem, there are no plans for The Matrix: Resurrection with Robert Pattinson leading a renegade group of hackers fighting an evil virus that has been injected into the Matrix mainframe.

But then there are the rumors that Sacha Baron Cohen has enlisted a panoply of celebrities, including Bono, Elton John, Snoop Dog and even Madonna to record a spoof of the Band Aid single "Do They Know It's Christmas" for the Bruno finale. The parody would reportedly feature the lyrics, "For people of Africa who live in hell/They will never wear Chanel." A bit suspicious given that the story broke on April 1st, but in this case ... hmm.

  • Bruno too Edgy for MPAA Board, Gets Slapped with NC-17

Bruno Despite rave reactions and gut-busting laughter from test audiences, the movie ratings board was not amused with the first submission of Bruno, and stuck it with a kiss-of-death NC-17 rating that the studio will not support. Such censorship is ubiquitous of course, but in this case it cuts pretty close to the core of the movie, which aims to challenge audiences to "question our own discomfort when we are confronted with images that challenge our preconceptions about sexuality." In any case, it's back to the edit bay for Sacha Baron Cohen. Likely to fall to the cutting room floor are a sex scene between Bruno and another character and Bruno's naked surprise visit to to the tent of a fellow hunter. Filmmakers remain optimistic that they can make the cuts and keep the movie intact in a toned-down R-rated version for theatrical release. And the deleted scenes will just have to wait until the movie shows up on a director's cut DVD.

  • Early Bruno Review: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

BrunoAICN has posted an early review of the new Bruno movie from someone who got a peek at a test screening. Not much in the way of spoilers there but some early indications of difficulties that Sacha Baron Cohen had in making the movie and may have in reaching some audiences. Here's a short version.

The good: There are some scenes that were so incredibly funny that they had the reviewer and nearly everyone else in the audience nearly dry heaving. It is, he says, "crazier than anything you've seen in a mainstream theater, and yes, that includes Borat."

The bad: Cohen's notoriety really does appear to making it harder for him to find unwitting victims to prank. Harder, but not impossible. And he's clearly not giving up. The Smoking Gun just published a list of websites of dozens of front companies Cohen has used to try to establish his credibility. And he is disappearing them nearly as fast as they are discovered.

The ugly: The film may just be too gay for Middle America.

The bottom line though is that the movie promises to be one of the funniest of the year.

  • First Bruno Footage Features Extreme Parenting, Honky Tonk Hi-jinks

BrunoThe first footage from Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno came out of the closet at SXSW this weekend, and there is nothing shy about it. Opening with the announcement that he wants to be the biggest Austrian celebrity since Hitler, Bruno quickly demonstrates that he can lure in the unsuspecting as well as his Kazak cousin, with side-splitting results. In one sequence, he interviews real showbiz moms eager to jump-start their 3-year-old daughters' modeling careers. "Is your baby comfortable with bees, wasps, and hornets?" Willing to lose a third of her body weight for a modeling job? Pose like Jesus on the cross? Not a problem for these ambitious moms. Later, Bruno, now reinvented as Straight Dave, the host of a TV wrestling show called "Man-Slamming Maxout," takes his homo-erotic act on the road in Texarkana, Arkansas, for an audience of "chanting, beer-bellied, Confederate-flag-waving men," with literally riotous results.

Looks like we might just have a worthy successor to Borat in the making.

  • Secrets of Bruno's Success

BrunoHow does Sacha Baron Cohen do it? How does he manage to slither into so many places he shouldn't and get taken for someone he isn't. On a recent episode of The View, Patricia Arquette explained how he managed to fake his way on the set of NBC's Medium last November. Arquette, who was in the courtroom scene where Cohen, aka Bruno, made his appearance, recounted that here was this bizarre extra in the jury box, making strange faces and inappropriate comments. Normally, a crazy extra would get summarily ejected. But the in this case, people on set weren't sure what do, because he had prepared his way by planting a rumor that he was the cousin of much-feared NBC network boss Ben Silverman. No one had a clue that they being pranked by Bruno. Eventually, necessity overcame fear though, and he was shown the door. Will the incident make it into the movie? Hard to say. It is still unclear whether Cohen managed to get his own footage of the prank, or whether in this case he will have to rely on the good humor of NBC.

  • Spotting Bruno

BrunoIdle hands are the devil's workshop. Doubly so when Sacha Baron Cohen is involved. Now that the release of his new vehicle Bruno has gotten pushed back from May 15 to July 10, the chameleon-like comedian has some extra time for mischief. Suspicions are high. One curious rumor has him faking a career as black R&B music producer Ryan Leslie. Seems a bit far fetched given the guy's elaborate resume, but there is a passing resemblance. So, Borat or not? No official denial yet from Leslie, but there are other signs that it is getting a lot harder to tell who's keeping it real lately. Witness all the swirling gossip about whether Joaquin Phoenix's stumbling new career in rap music is an elaborate hoax put on to help his brother-in-law with a documentary. No doubt Bruno would approve.

  • Bruno to Test Audience Humor With Black Jesus

BrunoIt is not just heterosexual males that are likely to take offense at the antics of Sasha Baron Cohen in -- to give his upcoming movie it's full title -- Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America For The Purpose Of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable In The Presence Of A Gay Foreigner In A Mesh T-Shirt.

According to The Sun, religious members of US test audiences didn't see the humor in having one of the characters in the film be a black model called Jesus who wears a loincloth and a crown of thorns. Normally pissing off your test audience is a bad sign, but in this case it is likely exactly what Cohen was aiming for. And there may be more to the story here than The Sun is reporting. It seems unlikely that a mere black Jesus would bother a modern audience so much, but a gay black Jesus, perhaps?

  • Bruno Takes on Madonna (again)

BrunoImitation is not always flattery, especially when Sacha Baron Cohen is involved. The British press is reporting that in his upcoming movie Bruno, the comic actor will mock the music diva's adoption of Malawian child David Banda. One storyline in Bruno has Cohen's alter ego, a flaming Austrian fashion presenter, and his boyfriend "Diesel" adopting an African baby named David and parading him around the fashion capitals of the world. Although Cohen and Madonna have worked together in the past -- he was featured in her video Music -- it is not his first joke at her expense. At the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards he followed her performance up with the comment "The singer before me -- who was he? It was very courageous of MTV to start the show with a genuine transvestite."

  • Bruno Wreaking Gay Austrian Havoc Worldwide

Why is this considered funny? Someone please explain.Sacha Baron Cohen's latest incarnation, the flamboyantly gay Austrian talk-show host Bruno, is already raising eyebrows as the Borat creator gathers material for his latest comedy.

Yesterday, former Israeli Defense Forces intelligence officer Yossi Alpher sheepishly revealed in The Forward that he'd been lured into an interview with Bruno under the guise of discussing Israeli-Palestinian relations. Expecting a frank discussion of Middle East affairs, Alpher was instead subjected to Bruno's (admittedly not altogether hilarious) butchering of the word "Hamas."

Today, AP reports that a pair of Arkansas towns recently fell victim to suspiciously Bruno-esque pranks. Last month, residents of Texarkana and Fort Smith bought tickets for "Blue Collar Brawlin'," advertised as "Hot Chicks, Cold Beer and Hardcore Fights." But instead of good old-fashioned cage-fighting, attendees were treated to some seriously egregious man-on-man PDA action. While Cohen wasn't spotted at the events, the pranks bear all the earmarks of the comedian's handiwork.

Cohen might want to watch his back. Cage fighting aficionados and Mossad agents are two groups you do not want on your bad side.

  • Cohen to play Mercury

Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen has signed on to play Freddie Mercury in a biopic based on the life of the flamboyant frontman of the British rock band Queen, according to The Daily Mirror.

Cohen, who edged out Johnny Depp to win the role, reportedly modeled his Borat look after Mercury, whose appetite for debauchery was legendary even by the high standards of rock and roll. Mercury died of complications from AIDS in 1991.
