  • David Goyer Discusses Ghost Rider 2

Ghost RiderWhen Sony announced that Ghost Rider 2 was moving forward, an older David Goyer script was mentioned as the possible basis of the storyline. Collider spoke with Goyer and asked him to explain how a script he wrote so long ago became the basis for a sequel.

I wrote a script for that about 9 years ago, and Sony decided and the producers, that they wanted to make that as the sequel script. So, in this case, I'm coming on as a producer and we're basically just doing a polish of my 9-year-old script. so there's not as much work involved. So that was kind of nice to see that one come full circle after 9 years.

Goyer's original script called for an R-rating, though that will not be the case for Ghost Rider 2. Still, Goyer insists that shouldn't put off any fans.

It was definitely written as a hard-R. originally I was writing it, Stephen Norrington was going to direct it and I was going to produce it and it was a, you know, Blade-type film, and now they want it to be PG-13. That having been said, The Dark Knight has come out, and The Dark Knight was ... I like to say it was sort of skirting the bleeding edge of PG-13, so I think that people feel like you can get away with a lot ... not get away, but people's concepts of what a PG-13 movie can be I think have changed. There's no question we're going to have tone some things down, but I don't think we'll have to do that much.

Ghost Rider 2 currently has no scheduled release date. Nicolas Cage is expected to return and hopes the sequel goes in a "whole other direction."

  • Ghost Rider Sequel Moving Forward

Ghost RiderAfter Disney's $4 billion acquisition of Marvel, any movie studio owning rights to a Marvel property went scrambling to continue development or risk having those rights reclaimed by Marvel and its new parent company.

According to a report from Variety, Columbia is now actively pursuing a sequel to Ghost Rider, and has brought in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight scribe David Goyer to work out the story and supervise writers for the Nicloas Cage vehicle. Goyer says he hasn't officially signed on for the sequel yet, but plans are in place to base the sequel on a Ghost Rider script Goyer wrote years ago. Director Mark Steven Johnson used his own script for the original Ghost Rider.

Columbia isn't the only studio worried about losing rights to Marvel characters. Fox is rebooting The Fantastic Four and every possible X-Men movie, while Sony is already writing the scripts for Spider-Man 5 and 6.

Having Goyer attached to Ghost Rider 2 would likely be considered a positive move for Cage, who is returning for the sequel and has already stated that he is hoping to go in a "whole other direction."

  • X-Men Origins: Magneto May Begin in 2010!

X-Men Origins: MagnetoSuper producer David Goyer says that a Magneto movie may start as soon as next year. "They're still thinking about doing it," Goyer revealed to MTV News. "They're definitely looking into doing other X-Men spin offs."

Since the Wolverine movie was one of this summer's biggest blockbusters, I think we all can all say in unison, "No duh, David!" But when is X-Men Origins: Magneto actually going to get under way? Goyer continues...

"I've been in touch with them. I'm sure that project will move forward in the next year or so."

Just how Goyer will pull off all the movies he has on his plate, including Supermax, Batman 3, and Flash Forward, while turning in a quality Magneto script all in one year, you may ask? We don't know either, but according to Goyer we should all find out within the next year.

  • Is James McTeigue Directing the Next Superman?
    Superman

Last week, IESB reported that Warner Bros. had closed the door on Bryan Singer's involvement with Superman and were looking to reboot the franchise, possibly with James McTeigue as director and Andy and Larry Wachowski producing.

Warner was supposedly hoping for a more action-oriented director, which McTeigue may prove to be with his upcoming Ninja Assassin. However, when SlashFilm asked McTeigue about the possibility of directing Superman, his answer was decidely vague:

You know ... I ... I would say. .. I'll keep you guessing, actually. It's good not to dispel every rumor, right?

McTeigue's answer was surprising considering he was the one to announce Warner's interest in having the Wachowskis take over the Superman franchise in February. At the time, McTeigue thought the Wachowskis may be too busy should their pet project Plastic Man get off the ground, though McTeigue says the movie, at this point, is dead:

Obviously, Larry and Andy, did a script for Plastic Man back in the day. I'll be very surprised if that movie gets made. We haven't ever really talked about it. But I know it's still a Joel [Silver] property or a Warner property...

After directing V For Vendetta, McTeigue has been no stranger to comic book adaptation speculation. At one point he was in talks to direct X-Men Origins: Magneto, though he dismissed those rumors:

[Magneto] was just one of those rumors that started out and I don't know where it came from or how it came up. I think that David Goyer would be surprised about that actually.

I mean, you know, it's not a bad idea.

So no Plastic Man, Magneto's "not a bad idea," and maybe to Superman? McTeigue could potentially have a full slate is any of these rumors become substantiated. Until then, fanboys will have to wait on Ninja Assassin's November 25 release to see if McTeigue's got the goods.

  • Deadpool Wins Fan Poll For Next X-Men Movie

The fans have spoken... to MTV anyway. A poll released last week asked which X-Men-related movie fans wanted to see next: X-Men Origins: Magneto, Wolverine 2, Deadpool, or X-Men: First Class. The results are in and the winner is (should be no surprise if you read the title of this piece): Deadpool, with 32% of the unspecified amount of votes!

Wolverine 2 came in second, with First Class and Magento finishing third and fourth, respectively. Ironically, X-Men Origins: Wolverine seems to set up First Class as the next movie, with Cyclops (Tim Pocock) meeting up with a group of young mutants at the end. Deadpool, a spin-off starring Ryan Reynolds, seems the more difficult movie to fit into continuity considering that Deadpool ends up in, well, not to give anything away, so let's just say...he has his head chopped off and falls down a nuclear silo. Hope that didn't spoil anything.

First Class has Josh Schwartz penning the script, while Magneto, with a script by David Goyer, may be directed by James McTeigue if given the greenlight.

Which X-Men movie do you want to see? Hit us back with a comment.

  • David Goyer Thinks Christopher Nolan Will Return for Batman 3

The Dark KnightThe possibility of Christopher Nolan returning for Batman 3 was in question this week when a report revealed that Nolan would need much convincing to come back.

IGN spoke with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight writer David Goyer, who gave a brief and positive disclosure that Nolan would return to the Batman franchise.

Well, I believe he said if we can find the story that he's happy with, that he would return. And unfortunately, respecting Chris... You know, talk to him after he finishes Inception, which he's shooting right now. That just started shooting.

What Goyer means by "unfortunately, respecting Chris..." is anyone's guess. It's best to concentrate on the "he would return" part.

  • Green Lantern Not "On Hold"

Green LanternDavid Goyer may have said that future DC comic movie adaptations were "on hold," but screenwriter Marc Guggenheim doesn't think that applies to his and writer/director Greg Berlanti's Green Lantern. "I don't think David was referring to Green Lantern. I think David was referring to other properties. That doesn't jibe with the information that I've been getting," Guggenheim told Newsarama.

Goyer's "other properties" include adaptations of DC's The Flash and Green Arrow, so it would seem Green Lantern is still very much green lit. In fact, Warner Brothers President Alan Horn said in December that Green Lantern was "next."

  • Batman 3 Moving Forward?

The Dark KnightIt's easy to get caught up in the rumors swirling around a possible Batman sequel, but finally it looks like director Christopher Nolan is working on the project. MTV spoke to Dark Knight producer Chuck Roven who said: "I know that Chris [Nolan] and [writer] David Goyer are talking and thinking. We're hoping, of course, that they find and rest on something that they'll find is worthy to do, but we don't know anything more than you do right now."

As far as whether Nolan will keep the next Batman villains as real as before: "All I can say -- because I really don't know more than you do -- is that I see no reason why, tonally, Chris would do anything different than he's done in the first two films."

That means no more Eddie Murphy as Riddler rumors, everyone.

  • David Goyer Says DC Movies "On Hold"

DC ComicsDavid Goyer, writer/director of the upcoming The Unborn told IESB that the DC comic book adaptations at Warner Brothers, movies like The Flash, which Goyer was writing at one point, have been put on hold.

"A lot of the DC movies at Warner Brothers are all on hold while they figure out ... they're going to come up with some new plan, methodology, things like that so everything has just been pressed pause on at the moment. It was the doubleheader of both Iron Man and The Dark Knight coming out, so more than ever I think they've realized, I think DC was responsible for 15% of Warner Brothers' revenue this year, something crazy like that, so they realized that comic books, it's become a new genre, one of the most successful genres."

Also on hold is Goyer's adaptation of X-Men Origins: Magneto, and Goyer told Craveonline: "they [Fox] still want to make it and they're hoping Wolverine will be a big hit and that'll open the way for Magneto."

  • X-Men Origins: Magneto Officially on Hold

May 1, 2009, will be a big day for the X-Men franchise. The premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine will now officially be the prognosticator for any future X-Men movies. With a script by director David Goyer that the studio is very pleased with, plans to make the Magneto are on hold until the success of Wolverine, or lack thereof, can be assessed. Goyer is already moving on to direct The Invisible Man next -- a potential conflict with Magneto -- should a decision be made to move forward with it.

  • A Glimpse of Exorcism Gone Awry in New Clip from The Unborn

In the first clip from David Goyer's supernatural thriller The Unborn, which just surfaced on MySpace, the eyes have it. Demon-possessed eyes that is. There is no dialogue, but plenty of terror and screaming in this glimpse of a demonic unborn twin who gets stronger with every possession. Just a glance from this ghoulish-looking young boy possessed, and stuff starts flying, people run in terror, and even the priest lets loose with a blood-curdling scream. It looks as if this attempt at exorcism has gone decidedly awry.

  • Upcoming X-Men Sequels

X-Men Origins: WolverineWith X-Men Origins: Wolverine's May 1, 2009, release date approaching, Fox is already planning more X-Men movies.

In the hopes that Wolverine will be a huge success, X-Men Origins: Magneto is already being developed, with The Dark Knight writer David Goyer attached as director, and a plot revolving around Magneto's concentration camp beginnings, as seen in the first X-Men, and his friendship with a young Charles Xavier that eventually breaks apart as their philosophies evolve and differ.

Fox has also announced a movie adaptation of the comic book X-Men: First Class which will examine the early years at the Xavier School, featuring some of the mutants shown in the previous trilogy. Variety confirmed that Josh Schwartz, creator of TV's Gossip Girl, will write the screenplay.

Lastly, a Deadpool movie is in discussion, a spin-off of the comic book assassin Ryan Reynolds portrays in X-men Origins: Wolverine, should the movie be a hit and Reynolds becomes an audience favorite.

  • Mignola Plans 'Different Direction' for Vampire Flick Baltimore

The cover of Baltimore, etc.Vampires, it seems, are the new gangsters. Books, movies, and TV shows centered around the nocturnal bloodsuckers are practically ubiquitous these days, with one project in particular attracting almost frightening levels of interest.

Busily readying a vampire-themed project of his own is Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. While out promoting the Blu-ray release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army last night, Mignola gave us an update on the movie adaptation of his vampire-themed graphic novel Baltimore, or the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire, which David Goyer (The Unborn) is slated to direct:

"We're taking it in a different direction," Mignola, who co-wrote the comic along with Christopher Golden, told us. "The book is very complex and involved and kind of a story-within-a-story thing, and I think we've come up with a way to streamline it so that it's filmable.... Right now the ball is in our court to sit down and write the new version of the screenplay."

Since Baltimore's script hasn't been finalized, a shooting date is still a long ways off. "At this point it's just (about) keeping the studio interested in it, because it's gone on for a while and we've gone in a couple of different directions with the screenplay," said Mignola. "I've never been involved in anything like this. With Hellboy, it was entirely (director Guillermo) del Toro doing these meetings and stuff.... I've never been in this place, meeting with studios and meeting with directors and that kind of stuff, so I have no idea how the hell this kind of thing works."

If Mignola and company do succeed in getting the project off the ground, a suggested first order of business might be to shorten the title, which in its current state is only slightly less cumbersome than The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain.
