  • Tobey Maguire Talks About the Strain of Brothers

Brothers Tobey Maguire told The LA Times that the intensity of working on his latest movie, the family drama Brothers, had such an effect that he "lost a lot of joy" while working on it.

I wasn't even aware of it. I don't mean it to sound goofy or artsy or something, but two days before we wrapped, I started telling some jokes and laughing, whatever, and it was like a release for me. I hadn't done that in, like, two months.

Brothers follows a military wife (Natalie Portman) who is told that her husband (Maguire) has died in Afghanistan. Grieving, she finds solace with her husband's brother (Jake Gyllenhaal) until her husband suddenly arrives home. The role is a real change of pace for the Spider-Man actor, who was pleased to shed some light on the real problems that soldiers face.

In the area of our veterans coming home with traumas or PTSD or whatever, it's one of those issues that isn't pretty to look at. We ask these people to fight for us and risk their lives, and certainly potentially alter their outlook of the world or how they react to things. I think it would be nice for us as a society to have some more awareness of what they go through, and to take on some more responsibility for the results of our asking them to go over there.

Maguire lost 20 pounds to play the Marine captain who survives captivity in Afghanistan and says that playing the role had a profound effect on him.

The general sort of tone of the piece and the character stuck with me — it was more like a mood. I was in a mood for two months.

Brothers was based on the Danish movie Brødre and was directed by Jim Sheridan. Brothers opens December 4.

  • Robert DeNiro and Jude Law May Be Joining Cast of Thor

ThorThe Kenneth Branagh-led live-action adaptation of the classic Marvel Comics character Thor may have just gotten another injection of star power. After little-known actor Chris Hemsworth was cast in the title role, fans were wondering whether Captain Kirk's dad would be enough of a draw to get non-comic book fans to see the movie.

Subsequent Thor casting has proven that Branagh is looking to fill his movie with the very best that Hollywood has to offer. If the additions of Academy Award-nominated actress Natalie Portman and multiple award-winning actor Stellan Skarsgård isn't enough, the latest rumor has two-time Oscar-nominated actor Jude Law and two-time Oscar-winning actor Robert DeNiro joining the cast.

According to AICN, German-born Valkyrie actor Matthias Schweighöfer told German GQ that he is up for a role in Thor and that DeNiro and Law are already on board. There is no mention of who or what characters — this is a superhero movie with a basis in Norse mythology — DeNiro and Law would be portraying. Some rumors have DeNiro portraying Odin, the "All-Father" of Asgard and Thor's father, with Law playing Balder the Brave, Thor's confidante and (recently revealed in the Thor comic series) half-brother.

  • Comic Scribe Says Thor Script Is "Very, Very Good"

ThorIn the past, comic book writers were the last people Hollywood would go to for advice about their adaptations. That's changing, though. With many of the top-grossing films of the past decade based on comic book characters, the writers are gaining a little more cred.

At the recent Baltimore Comic-Con, prolific comic book scribe Brian Michael Bendis revealed that he is one of those rare comic creators afforded access in Hollywood, at least on the Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor movie currently in development at Marvel Studios. Bendis, one of the designers of the "Ultimate" universe, a modern retelling of classic Marvel characters designed to appeal to new readers, confirmed that Thor would precede the release of Captain America: The First Avenger, and that he had read the script. Bendis joked:

I'm Thor. A Jewy Thor. I was reading the new script just last night. Very, very good.

Thor is currently in pre-production, with an expected January 2010 start, and will feature Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Natalie Portman as Thor's human love interest, Jane Foster.

  • David Gordon Green's Suspiria Remake to Shoot in 2010
    Suspiria Poster

David Gordon Green's career as a director has traveled through a variety of genres, starting in indie fare like All the Real Girls and Snow Angels before finding box office success with the stoner comedy Pineapple Express. Green's adding another genre to his resume with the upcoming horror thriller Freaks of the Heartland and a remake of Dario Argento's horror classic, Suspiria.

Green has been working on Suspiria for some time now, but, as Variety reports, shooting will finally begin in 2010. Green excitedly described the movie to ReelzChannel over a year ago:

It's great. You just have to see it. [I'm going for] the vivid technicolor achievement of The Red Shoes with the intensity and fear and anxiety of The Silence of the Lambs.

Natalie Portman has been rumored for the lead, but while no confirmation has been made, Portman is currently shooting the comedy fantasy Your Highness with Green and her production company is producing Suspiria, so chances are good that Portman will don some ballet slippers and join one of the creepiest dance academies ever.

  • Mila Kunis Joins Natalie Portman for Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan
    Mila Kunis

Empire Online reports that Mila Kunis (That '70s Show, Family Guy) has signed on for Black Swan, the next movie from director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream).

The "supernatural thriller" will star Natalie Portman as a veteran ballerina who develops a rivalry with Kunis' character, a dancer who may or may not be a product of the veteran's imagination. The movie is being produced by Phoenix Pictures and Aronfosky's own Protozoa Pictures.

John MacLaughlin wrote the original script, which was later revised by Protozoa's Mark Heyman. The movie will likely begin shooting this year, although there's no official word.

Aronofsky also planned a remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 sci-fi action hit RoboCop, but the future of that project is in doubt now that Black Swan is moving forward.

  • Thor Visits the Iron Man 2 Set
    Thor

After the shadow of bankruptcy threatened to dismantle the number one comic book company in America just a decade ago, Marvel Comics has emerged bigger and better than ever, helped in great part by the success of its movie production branch, Marvel Studios. Kevin Feige, President of Production for Marvel Studios, assumed command just as Iron Man was beginning production and today he is in charge of coordinating a whole slate of films in an effort to create a "shared universe" for Marvel characters to inhabit, where cross-overs and team-ups are commonplace, just as they are in the comics.

The precedent for cross-overs has already been set, with Robert Downey Jr. appearing as Tony Stark in both Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. Likewise, Samuel L. Jackson signed on to reprise the role of Nick Fury in as many as nine movies. So, who's next? It just might be the Norse thunder god Thor. While discussing Marvel's preparations for the San Diego Comic-Con, Feige dropped the news that Chris Hemsworth, recently signed to play Thor, stopped by the set of Iron Man 2:

Chris Hemsworth came by the (Iron Man 2) set a few weeks ago. There was nobody around, but it was the historic meeting of Thor and Tony Stark. Within a few minutes, the crew was whispering, "There's Thor." Some of them had worked on Star Trek, so they knew who he was, but you could feel the buzz.

The decision to cast Hemsworth, a relative unknown, in the title role of a big-budget effects-driven movie has been questioned by some and criticized by others, but Feige defends the decision:

I think the Marvel way is casting the best actor for the part. It can be somebody relatively new, but it can also be someone like Robert Downey Jr., who you wouldn't necessarily call an unknown.

Kenneth Branagh is signed on to direct Thor, with Natalie Portman cast as Jane Foster, Thor's human love interest, and Tom Hiddleston cast as Loki, Thor's evil half-brother.

  • Natalie Portman to Star as Love Interest in Thor

Natalie PortmanVariety and The Hollywood Reporter confirm that Natalie Portman will star as the love interest in Marvel Comics' upcoming adaptation of Thor.

Chris Hemsworth has already been cast in the title role. Portman will play Jane Foster, a nurse who becomes Thor's first love interest early in the comic book series. The story involves Thor's banishment to the world of everyday humanity after he commits reckless actions in battle.

The movie is being directed by Kenneth Branagh, who is best known for his cinematic interpretations of Shakespeare. It is set to begin shooting early next year and is slated for a May 20, 2011 release.

Other upcoming Portman projects include Jim Sheridan's Brothers, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire; Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan; David Gordon Green's Your Highness; and the ensemble vehicle New York, I Love You.

  • Jessica Biel to Appear in Thor?
    Jessica Biel

This sounds a little bit like a rumor, but sources are reporting that Jessica Biel is in negotiations to play Thor's love interest in the upcoming movie adaptation of the Thor comics.

The character was not directly named, but is supposedly a character from the animated movie Hulk vs. Thor, which means it would be either Sif, a fellow Asgardian and love interest from the comic books, or The Enchantress, a sorceress that often battled Thor and The Avengers in the comics.

This seems similar to the Natalie Portman as Sif rumor, so check back with ReelzChannel.com for more updates!

  • Natalie Portman to Star in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan

Natalie PortmanThe Hollywood Reporter confirms that Natalie Portman will star in Black Swan, the next movie from director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream). The "supernatural thriller" has Portman playing a veteran ballerina who develops a rivalry with another dancer — who may, or may not, be a product of the her imagination.

Black Swan was originally picked up in 2007 by Universal, which eventually let it go. The Creative Artists Agency represents both Portman and Aronofsky and is pitching the project to other studios. It is being produced by Phoenix Pictures and Aronfosky's own Protozoa Pictures. John MacLaughlin wrote the original script, which was later revised by Protozoa's Mark Heyman.

The movie could begin shooting sometime this year, if it sells quickly. Aronofsky is also at work on a remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 sci-fi action hit RoboCop.

  • Marvel President Updates Progress on The Avengers and Thor

ThorKevin Feige, President of Production at Marvel Studios, told Empire some updates regarding the adaptation of Thor and Avengers. First, he talked about Thor:

We will probably be having cast announcements in the next month or so on Thor. We're looking to cast Loki and Odin soon, and the main female role. And we'll also hopefully have lockdown shortly, gearing towards the beginning of production, which will be early next year. So I think there will be a lot of announcements between now and then.

Director Kenneth Branagh has already confirmed that shooting was to begin in January of next year. As for casting rumors, Josh Hartnett has been mentioned as the front-runner for Loki, and Natalie Portman the female lead, likely Thor's wife Sif. Looks like fans will know for sure sometime next month.

    Feige also updated Branagh's pre-production:

Branagh's here, we're prepping, and he's put together some spectacular animatics already for our first action scene. We're digging into the second and third now, and we are just embarking on a rewrite of the draft.

    As for The Avengers:

Zak Penn [X2: X-Men United and The Incredible Hulk writer] is already on board The Avengers [as screenwriter] and he's spending a lot of his time looking into what we're doing with Iron Man [2], Thor and Captain America, seeing how we're tying it all together. And he's beginning to outline the script now -- he'll be doing that over the summer.

Feige offered no update as to whether Jon Favreau will direct The Avengers. Thor opens June 17, 2011, while The Avengers opens May 4, 2012.

  • Charlie Hunnam Screen Tests for Thor

    Thor

Thor, the mythological Norse god of thunder and one of the founding members of Marvel Comics' super-team, the Avengers, is expected to be one of the most complex -- and commercially risky -- comic-to-film adaptations in Marvel's planned lead-up to the Avengers feature film.

The intended release date for the film has already been pushed back, and there have been no shortage of cast rumors -- from Josh Hartnett or Natalie Portman portraying the evil trickster god Loki, to Alexander Skarsgård lifting the hammer in the Thor role -- but recently one more name has been added to the list: Charlie Hunnam of the FX series Sons of Anarchy. At the recent premiere of Mutant Chronicles, Hunnam was asked about the Thor rumor and he admitted that he had been called in for the role.

Superhero films were once thought of as cheap, "popcorn flicks," but with films such as Iron Man (2008) and The Dark Knight (2008) scoring record box office numbers while simultaneously courting Oscar buzz, the genre has come out of the shadows and into the Hollywood spotlight.

Still, the prospect of playing a larger-than-life character in spandex (or leather, armor, etc.) can be a daunting decision for any actor. About his film choices, Hunnam has said:

Well, I have a great deal of pride, and I care infinitely about what my peers think (of me). It could be my downfall, but I don't think it is -- Hollywood is run on perception, and if you stray off the path of what you want to do with your career, it's suicide. I have 60 years to make the money, but the choices I make in the next five years are really going to define my career.

Hunnam has appeared in Cold Mountain (2003), Green Street Hooligans (2005), and Children of Men (2006). He currently stars as Jackson "Jax" Teller on the FX series Sons of Anarchy.

  • Robert Pattinson Rumored To Be Dating Natalie Portman

Robert Pattinson Dating Natalie PortmanThere are plenty of reasons to love-to-hate Natalie Portman. She's obviously beautiful. She's really smart -- not only did she graduate from Harvard, she earned high marks while there from the likes of Alan Dershowitz. She an ethical vegetarian who actually seems to practice what she preaches, even designing her own line of vegan shoes, as she doesn't wear leather. She is, in short, on another level of humanity ... and now this.

Rumors are circulating that the young actress is dating Robert Pattinson. Sources say the two met at a pre-Oscars party in February and have been in touch ever since. "He seemed to be enjoying every minute of it," says an insider of their meeting. "She dominated his attention for most of the evening."

Who knows how much truth there is to such gossip? But if it's true, at least Natalie is worthy of him.

  • Natalie Portman naked!

ReelzChannel was able to see an early press screening of Wes Anderson's new movie, The Darjeeling Limited (which is very good) and a short film was shown beforehand. A note was handed out to everyone stating, "A note from the director of this film. There are two parts to The Darjeeling Limited. First, there is a short film which is a separate story from but is slightly related to the main feature. It will not be shown in theatres but instead on the internet and also at film festivals and on the DVD. Our goal is to get every person who goes to the film to see the short first."

The short film was about two lovers played by Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman meeting up in a French hotel room. Jason undresses her and she can be seen from the side in her birthday suit. We all know she exposed some skin in Closer and she apparently does it again in Goya's Ghosts, but putting something like this on the interent right away could spread like wildfire. A smart marketing move by Wes and Fox Searchlight, but how does Natalie feel about that?  We've looked for the short already online and can't find it yet, but when we do we'll let you know!

Next Showing: The Darjeeling Limited opens in limited theaters on September 29th.
