  • Will Wes Craven Return for Scream 4?

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

Last weekend at Comic-Con, Kickin' It Old Skool star Jamie Kennedy stressed to anyone who'd listen that a new Scream sequel is in the works. At first we were inclined to dismiss it as wishful thinking on the part of Kennedy, who starred in the last episode of blockbuster horror franchise, Scream 3, way back in 2000. So later on we sought out a more credible source to Scream star Neve Campbell, back when she was relevantcheck the veracity of Kennedy's Scream 4 claims: Wes Craven, director of the first three Scream flicks.

"I've heard that (Scream producer) Bob Weinstein is thinking about it, and I think he has asked around my agency whether I'd be interested," said Craven, who was at the Con to promote his new movie 25/8. "Right now I don't think anything's official but I have heard that he's thinking about it seriously for the first time."

Roughly translated from vague Hollywood industry jargon, Craven's comments most likely mean that he's in negotiations to direct Scream 4 but is prohibited from talking about it until the contract is signed.

  • Goyer: Warner Bros. "Reevaluating" Green Arrow Movie

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

With Batman currently the box office's reigning comic book hero, thoughts turn to the big screen prospects of other titles in the DC Comics library. One character eagerly awaiting his shot is Green Arrow, the acerbic Robin Hood of the DC universe, whose vehicle Super Max is one of Hollywood's longer-gestating projects.

Pressed for an update on the film at Comic-Con, Super Max writer/director David Goyer, who was in San Diego to promote his upcoming horror flick Unborn, stated that Warner Bros. is now "reevaluating" the project. Iron Man and The Dark Knight have "changed the landscape" of superhero movies, he noted, and now Warner Bros. is re-thinking how they approach the DC-based titles in their stable of upcoming flicks.

Of course, "reevaluating" could mean anything from simply re-tooling the script to shelving the project entirely. In this case, it's more likely the former, as Goyer remains hopeful that the project will move forward within a year.

  • Transformers 2 Will Be "Angrier" than the First, Says Tyrese

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

What does preeminent action director Michael Bay have in store for his follow-up to last year's talking-robot sci-fi smash, Transformers? Tyrese Gibson, who reprises his role of Air Force Tech Sergeant Epps in the much anticipated sequel, told us today at Comic-Con that Transformers 2 (now officially known as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) is "crazier, more angry, (with) Tyrese Gibson, about to put the smack down in Death Racebigger explosions and more robots" than its predecessor.

"The stakes have been brought up to a whole 'nother level," Gibson added. "The conflict between the humans and the Decepticons -- and between the Autobots and the Decepticons -- it's just more angry."

Gibson still has a few months of shooting left on the Transformers sequel. He can next be seen alongside Jason Statham in the futuristic smash-up Death Race, which opens nationwide on August 22, 2008.

  • Clone Wars Director Promises More Action, Faster Pace than Prequels

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

While George Lucas' Star Wars prequels proved successful at the box office, many fans complained that episodes One through Three were too light on action and too heavy on expositional dialogue and political wrangling. Director Dave Filoni promises this won't be the case with Star Wars: The Clone Wars, his animated addition to the fabled sci-fi saga.

Anakin Skywalker with his new protege, Ahoska"The Clone Wars movie, at the end of the day, has a lot of action," Filoni explained to me today at Comic-Con. "The action sequences kind of tie it all together and the story moves through the big battle scenes. It's very fast-paced. I know the live-action (Star Wars) movies are pretty fast-paced, but the prequels were kind of longer feeling than the old-style movies. There's more of a serialized feeling in A New Hope or Empire Strikes Back...the Clone Wars are a little bit more in that classic sensibility where the story moves quickly, it's faster-paced and the characters kind of develop on the go."

"The movie will surprise (fans) because many, many things blow up," he joked. "We kind of start off in that grand tradition of Star Wars...and then we move on from there and broaden into a whole bunch of different tales."

  • Twilight Author Talks About Movie's Influence on Breaking Dawn

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

Twilight has pretty much already been declared a hit even though it doesn't release in theaters until December 12th. A sequel (New Moon) is already planned and when the fourth book, Breaking Dawn, hits book stores on August 2nd, it's pretty likely screenwriters will be getting to work shortly thereafter.

We asked series author Stephenie Meyer whether the casting of her creations on screen has had any influence on the her writing as she continues the adventures of her Twilight creations.

"Luckily I got a head start. I had finished Eclipse before Twilight ever came out in the stores," Meyer told us.

"With Breaking Dawn, I already knew exactly what I was going to write. I had the outline. I knew what I was doing. I wasn't influenced by fan reaction or by the movie."

Meyer pauses, then admits that it has started to pop into her head: "Although, I will admit, when I read it now, I'm picturing Rob [Pattinson] and Kristen [Stewart] doing the stuff." (Laughs)

  • Twilight's Edward Discusses Diamond Skin Effect

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

As every Twilight fan surely knows, the first book in Stephenie Meyer's mega-popular series is coming to the big screen this December.

Fans are clamoring for every bit of information they can get ahold of and wondering exactly how each and every bit of Meyer's eloquent description will be translated to the cinematic version. One such element is the book's description of the way Edward's skin "shines like diamonds" when he steps into the sunlight.

We sat down with the cast of Twilight at Comic-Con to ask every question we could think of about the highly-anticipated movie.

Here's what Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) had to say about the diamond skin: "I haven't actually seen that yet. It is CG but I don't know what it's going to look like. That was one of the hardest things to do. We did like a thousand different ideas. We did this thing with flakes of salt and every single thing [they could think of]. I remember they painted one of the PA's blue, which was kind of a confused direction." (Laughs)

  • Take Down Woodward and Bernstein in the New Watchmen Game

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Interactive announced plans for a new videogame based on Zack Snyder's upcoming movie adaptation of Watchmen -- a head-scratching proposition for anyone familiar with the philosophically intricate, morally complex world of Alan Moore's classic graphic novel.

The Comedian, played by Jeffrey Dean MorganToday at Comic-Con, I asked Snyder to shed some light on what fans might expect in the game, billed as a prequel of sorts to the much anticipated movie. "One of the plots -- just to rough it -- is that Woodward and Bernstein are in New York lecturing, and the Comedian assassinates them," Snyder told me. "It's all like that, in that style."

Watchmen fans will of course remember the Comedian as the ruthless, amoral "mask" in the employ of the U.S. government. His work -- as well as that of god-like Doctor Manhattan -- enables President Nixon to serve five terms in office, according to the novel's alternative history.

  • Sparkling New Watchmen Footage Unveiled at Comic-Con

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

Director Zack Snyder wowed attendees of this afternoon's Watchmen panel when he unveiled some dazzling new footage from the film. The awestruck Comic-Con crowd swooned at the new, thoroughly R-rated clip, which featured scenes from the trailer expanded to provide more context.

Some highlights included: a giant Doctor Manhattan disintegrating a bunch of soldiers in Vietnam, Nite Owl and Silk Spectre II kissing while a mushroom cloud explodes behind them, Rorshach uncovering Comedian's arsenal, Doctor Manhattan creating his Martian castle (my personal favorite), an elderly Nixon turning to face his advisers, and Dollar Bill lying dead after getting his cape caught in the door at the bank.

Judging from the audience reaction, the new footage ranks on par with Jon Favreau's unveiling of Iron Man footage at last year's Comic-Con.

  • Feige Indicates Favreau Back for Iron Man 2

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

Iron Man 2ReelzChannel is live on the Comic-Con scene today for the Marvel Your Universe panel with president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, president of publishing, Joe Quesada and Craig Kyle, VP of creative development for Marvel Animation.

A fan asked about the recent rumors of contract disputes between Iron Man director Jon Favreau and Marvel Studios over Iron Man 2 and whether they have worked that out so that he can return to direct the second film. Feige smiled and asked the crowd if they wanted to see Favreau direct Iron Man 2. The response was an eruption of "yes" cheers. Feige grinned ear-to-ear, saying that an announcement would be coming very shortly. Although official confirmation wasn't made, it appeared clear that Favreau would soon be announced as director of Iron Man 2.

In other Marvel news, the Avengers Movie will officially have all five key characters and "you probably will see them all pop up together," says Feige coyly.

More on Marvel's happenings at Comic-Con as we hear it.

  • Punisher: War Zone Trailer, Ultraviolent Footage Debut at Comic-Con

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

Rambo ain't got nothin' on Frank Castle. Tonight at Comic-Con, the folks at Lionsgate unveiled a new trailer for The Punisher: War Zone, their upcoming reboot of the Marvel Comics franchise with Ray Stevenson (Titus Pullo of HBO's Rome) replacing Thomas Jane in the titular role of the ruthless vigilante anti-hero. And while the flick's slick, quick-cut ("candy-coated," as one witness aptly put it) preview elicited only a mildly positive response, a follow-up montage of the film's most violent moments, set to the music of Ramallah's "Days of Revenge," garnered raucous applause from the fanboy-heavy audience.

The copious images of machine-gun fire, exploding heads and eviscerated bodies reminded me of Sylvester Stallone's reboot of Rambo, which to this day remains the most violent mainstream movie I've ever seen. On the other hand, the trailer reminded me of Joel Schumacher, who you may remember directed a little movie called Batman & Robin. Take that as you will.

P.S. -- Stevenson is definitely an upgrade over Jane. More to come tomorrow...

  • Astro Boy Perhaps at Next Year's Comic-Con

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

AstroboyA movie that could very well be at Comic-Con next year is Astro Boy, the animated sci-fi story will star the voices of Scarlett Johanssen, Donald Sutherland, Nicolas Cage and Freddie Highmore in the title role. The movie is set for release next year, but here's the new poster. David Bowers, who was one of the directors of Flushed Away in 2006, is the director of Astro Boy. He tells ReelzChannel that the movie will go more for the heart than the laughs featured in Flushed Away.

It's based on the classic 1950s anime about a young android boy (Astro) who's created by his father to replace the real son he's lost. Astro doesn't work out at first but then it's discovered he was gifted with superior powers and skills, as well as the ability to experience human emotions. It's a very emotional story.
