  • CineVegas 2010 Cancelled

    Cinevegas

Las Vegas' annual independent film festival, CineVegas, is the latest casualty of the economy. After hosting its 11th annual festival this year, CineVegas, failed to generate enough sponsors to make a 2010 festival viable. CineVegas president Robin Greenspun said that this cancellation does not necessarily signal the demise of the festival.

Given the current economic climate and the pressures it has created, we made the difficult decision to put CineVegas on hiatus for the coming year. CineVegas has become such a well-respected film festival, and rather than allow the economy to affect its level of quality we have opted to put the event on hold.

Sundance's Trevor Groth acted as artistic director for CineVegas, putting together programming that combined commercial films, bizarre indies, and films about Las Vegas.

We are very sad to be announcing this hiatus, but it is our hope to keep the CineVegas brand alive and relaunch the festival once the economy recovers.

Other film festivals have scaled back in the wake of the economy crunch, and some have been cancelled, including the Jackson Hole Film Festival. Larger events like Toronto and Sundance have been relatively unscathed because of long-term sponsorship deals.

  • Pixar's Up Receives Historic Debut; First Reviews Overwhelmingly Positive

Up opens CannesThe Cannes Film Festival is underway and Pixar's latest effort Up, due in theaters in two weeks, makes history as the first animated feature screened on opening day. The movie is being shown in 3-D for the Cannes audience, although that will not be the norm for the wide release.

In the days leading up to today's screening, some reviews have already surfaced.

9"Winsome, touching and arguably the funniest Pixar effort ever, the gorgeously rendered, high-flying adventure is a tidy 90-minute distillation of all the signature touches that came before it."

    -- Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood Reporter

9"And though it's not yet summer, we can declare that Up, like WALL-E, will prove to be one of the most satisfying movie experiences of its year."

    -- Richard Corliss, Time

10"A captivating odd-couple adventure that becomes funnier and more exciting as it flies along."

    -- Todd McCarthy, Variety

Given that, it seems likely the Cannes response will be radically different from the last time an American movie opened the festival. In 2006, The Da Vinci Code resulted in the audience laughing in ridicule; it also prompted The New York Times' A.O. Scott to write one of his most ruthless and carping reviews of the year. It seems safe to say nothing like that will happen this time.

  • Adventures at Sundance

Adventureland One of the movies attracting the most attention at Sundance this past weekend was Adventureland, which premiered to a packed house. Directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad), the movie stars SNL actors Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig, Jesse Eisenberg (Squid and the Whale), and Kristen Stewart (Twilight).

Adventureland tells the story of fresh-out-of-college James Brennan, who's headed for Europe then to Columbia grad school, where he'll live with his wealthy best friend. At James' graduation dinner, he goes over his financial checklist with his mother and father -- only to learn that his dad has recently been demoted, meaning no check for James. To raise the money for grad school, he takes a summer job at amusement park, where his adventures include nearly being stabbed by a crazed dad seeking a stuffed panda.

Mottola said Adventureland was loosely based on his life growing up in Long Island and a summer job working in an amusement park. He also revealed that Kristen Stewart's character Em is a "composite of a few ex-girlfriends."

  • Ashton Kutcher Planning Sundance Reality Show

Ashton KutcherIngenious airhead Ashton Kutcher has a new trick up his sleeve: 24 Hours @ Sundance, a live online gameshow that will feature popular bloggers competing in various challenges against each other at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival. Example: One feat will involve convincing a Sundance attendee to sincerely agree that Kutcher should have one won an Oscar for Dude, Where's My Car? Funny stuff, but frankly, if anyone can pull that off, shouldn't they be directing their attentions toward bringing peace to the Middle East, or at least having a go on Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?

  • Hoffman Squashes Batman Rumor

    Toronto Film Festival

Philip Seymour HoffmanAt the Toronto Film Festival, Philip Seymour Hoffman told Dailies' Andrea Bain that he's not planning on playing the Penguin in the next Batman movie. And not just denying it, but denying it strongly: "It is truly the definition of rumor. It's wild because I've never heard this until a friend of mine told me she read about it in the paper and I was like, "That's, that's a rumor. If you looked it up in the dictionary, it would say, 'That is a rumor.' That's wild."

His response when asked if he'd be interested? "I don’t know," he said. "I haven't read anything, no one's ever offered me anything, it might just be completely bogus." Which, if you ask us, can only mean one thing: Philip Seymour Hoffman is not playing the Penguin in the next Batman movie ... unless someone offers him the gig.

According to our Batman Villains & Casting Speculation article, that leaves Jack Black as the other option.

For ReelzChannel TV coverage of Batman villain and other casting news, tune in to Dailies tonight at 8:00 PM ET.

  • Cinevegas Kicks Off With Rainn Wilson in The Rocker

    Cinevegas

The Cinevegas Film Festival kicked off its tenth anniversary last night in sin city with the comedy The Rocker, starring Rainn Wilson, Emma Stone, Jane Lynch, Will Arnett, Fred Armisen and Jeff Garlin.

The full cast was in attendance and members of "the band" arrived for the red carpet in a tour bus. Wilson was fully decked out as his character from the movie, Robert "Fish" Fishman, complete with tight leather pants, a bandana and studded armbands.

We'll be bringing you an early review of The Rocker shortly.

After the premiere, drinks and debauchery were in heavy rotation for the Cinevegas Opening Night Party at the Moon club at Palms, which was filled with enough hipster wannabes, silicone-injected actress hopefuls and meathead security guards to make anyone a little dizzy.

ReelzChannel is here in Vegas for the whole festival and we will be bringing you updates throughout.

  • News on John Singleton's Tulia

As we reported in August, John Singleton has taken over directorial duties from Carl Franklin on Tulia, a drama starring Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry about a real-life 1999 drug sting on a small Texas town in which a large chunk of the town's African-American population wound up wrongfully incarcerated.

We spoke to Kelly Whalen, the co-director of a documentary called Tulia, Texas that is based on the same set of events, at the AFI Film Fest in Dallas and she gave us some inside scoop on the story. "In 1998 there was an undercover agent that moved into town and made cases against 46 people who lived in this community for drug dealing, and 39 of them were black," explains Whalen. "Years later after many people received the maximum punishment in prison, this evidence started to surface, troubling evidence about [the agent]."

"A few months into our starting the project took off. The court of appeals granted this big evidentiary hearing to air the dirty laundry around the Narc, so it was incredible," Whalen continues. "The legal case basically shows that you can't trust his word, that he's a liar. We actually saw everyone released from prison that was still in prison. They got full pardons. The cases don't hold up."

Although it's unclear how much theatrical license Singleton will be taking with the Tulia story, Whalen did say that his screenwriter, Karen Croner, has asked for a copy of her documentary. Whether she's just watching it for research or bits of the documentary will make their way into Tulia remains to be seen.

Next Showing: Look for Tulia and Tulia, Texas later this year.
